About

2022’s New Eye on Berlin Study Away project was inspired by a seminal piece of German children’s illustrated literature Der Struwwelpeter. Students presented contemporary interpretations of Heinrich Hoffman’s 19th Century cautionary verse about misbehaving children and the disastrous consequences that befall them.

Working out of ArtCenter’s Archetype Press with the support of the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography, students produced a series of themed letterpress prints, based on Der Struwwelpeter that comprised a 15 print folio edition during the preceding term at ArtCenter.

In Berlin, students designed and hosted an exhibition in the heart of the city’s gallery district, Mitte, featuring the edition along with collectibles, zines, wearables and other products. After the exhibition, they toured museums, galleries and artist spaces, connecting to the creative cultural buffet of Berlin.
